Year 9 pupils complete Ten Tors Challenge

Two teams of Year 9 pupils took part in the Ten Tors Challenge 2017, a 35 mile Dartmoor wilderness walking challenge which attracts 2,500 participants. In a gruelling weekend event, including an overnight camp on the moor, the two teams had to be fully self-sufficient, carry all their own equipment and had no direct adult supervision.

Before the challenge, preparations were made by planning routes, eating and hydrating.

Team 1 consisted of: Kyle Davey, Vice-Captain Lily Della Valle, Vinnie Gillespie, Captain Mac Ryder, Rosco Parkin and Alex Sargeant.

Participants in Team 2 were: Vice-Captain Max Apthorpewere, Jack Chapillon, Ciaran Donoghue, Captain Sennon Grove,  Tom Maddock and Finn McNulty.

With challenges such as deflated tents, blisters, misplaced equipment and a navigational error, both teams were pleased to finish well within the time allotted to complete the course.

At the end of the weekend, there was an awards ceremony and a well-earned Cornish pasty for everyone.

Team 1 Vice Captain Lily Della Valle said the crowd at the end made it all worth it: “After so much hard work, it was an amazing experience to be welcomed back by hundreds of supporters cheering and applauding all the teams over the finish line.”
